Can we sign our marriage documents remotely?

Yes, you can! Well, one of them anyway: the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)

I just received an email from the Attorney General’s Department to advise that an authorised witness (that would be me – an Authorised Marriage Celebrant) can observe the signing of the NOIM via videoconferencing facilities such as Skype or Zoom as long as everyone is in Australia. This legislation is in place until 31 December 2022.

What hasn’t changed

The NOIM must still be given to the celebrant at least one month before the wedding date. You will also need to identify yourselves at the time of signing; couples usually use to of the following: a driver licence, original birth certificate or a passport. Once signed, the NOIM can be scanned in and emailed to me.

At the ceremony, the couple marrying, two witnesses over the age of 18 and the celebrant must still be physically present. Remote weddings as such are not ‘a thing’, although live streaming weddings is still a great idea.
